Chapter 188: He’s Jealous? What a Joke
"For a secret marriage... you’ve told quite a few people." River Sterling snapped out of it, clicking his tongue in jest as he flopped back onto the desk.
"Really?" Seth Quinn raised an eyebrow, a slight smile touching his lips. "If she weren’t against it, I’d tell even more people."
"Tsk, tsk. Seth, are you still the same Seth I used to know?"
River Sterling’s jaw nearly dropped. The Seth he used to know practically despised the sight of other women. He couldn’t even be bothered to spare his own girlfriends more than a word or a glance, let alone act this doting, this desperate for the world to know about his happiness.
"People change. If they don’t, it just means they haven’t met the right person yet," Linden Jennings added, sounding as if he spoke from deep experience.
’He was the same. Before he met a woman he loved, he’d always felt they were just... so-so. Having one in his life or not made no difference. But after he met Poppy Vance, he truly understood just how blissful it was for a man to have the woman he loves by his side.’
Seth Quinn and Linden Jennings exchanged a look, a clear case of great minds thinking alike. The sight made River Sterling roll his eyes.
"River," Linden Jennings said with a chuckle, seeing his friend’s expression. "Go find yourself a real girlfriend, then you won’t have to be jealous of me and Seth."
’Him? Jealous? He was River Sterling, a man who could flit through a field of flowers without a single petal clinging to him. He had the whole forest, so why would he be jealous of two guys who’d already decided to hang themselves from a single tree?’
’What a joke!’
Feeling salty, he decided to take a jab at someone. Linden Jennings and Poppy Vance’s relationship seemed bulletproof, leaving him no choice but to fearlessly take aim at Seth Quinn.
"Seth, if being married is so wonderful, where’s all this attitude coming from? Don’t tell me I was right. Is your wife not letting you touch her? Are you sexually frustrated? Or maybe... she just doesn’t care about you? Why else would she refuse to go public with the marriage?"
Both of River’s jabs struck a nerve. Seth Quinn’s expression, which had just softened, darkened once more. He narrowed his eyes dangerously and essentially kicked them both out, Linden Jennings included.
"It looks like you two have it way too easy, having all this time to stand around and bullshit. You want me to give you some more work?"
Hearing that, River Sterling shot to his feet. "Haha, President Quinn, no need!" he said, backtracking instantly. "I’m actually super busy. I should get back to work. Bye!"
A faint smile on his lips, Linden Jennings also rose and followed River Sterling out the door.
The moment they opened the door, they ran into Chase Childs, who was just about to knock.
"President Sterling, President Jennings."
"Ah, here to report to your President Quinn again, Assistant Childs?" River Sterling patted his shoulder and asked cheekily, intending to walk away right after.
But then he accidentally glimpsed the file in Chase Childs’s hands and stopped in his tracks. He slung an arm around the assistant’s shoulder and made a bit more small talk, all while his eyes darted toward the document a few more times.
Only then did he let him go. Chase knocked on Seth Quinn’s door and, after getting a response from inside, pushed it open and entered.
"Hey, hey, Linden! Looks like there’s going to be a good show tomorrow. You interested?" The moment Chase Childs disappeared into Seth Quinn’s office, River Sterling grabbed Linden Jennings, his face alight with excitement.
"What show? Not interested." Linden Jennings wasn’t interested in the slightest. ’Poppy is coming back tomorrow,’ he thought, ’and I plan on... spending the entire day in bed with her.’
River Sterling knew exactly why he wasn’t interested just by looking at him. He pouted, but his excitement didn’t wane in the least. "You can bring your dear Poppy Vance along! It’s a free show, a waste not to watch it. Don’t you think?"
"Fine, what’s the show?" It seemed River’s excitement was contagious, because Linden Jennings was now a little curious himself.
